What if I can’t afford supplements or extra meals?

I was reading an article about homemade weight gainer shakes on another fitness blog when I saw one of the comments: “What if I don’t have enough money for the whey (protein)?”

Since so many people who claim to want to get into shape also claim that they can’t afford to eat enough food, buy enough supplements or pay a gym membership, I thought I’d write an article explaining how to get past all of these barriers.

 

There’s a lot to be learned from junkies, alcoholics and chain-smokers . . .

Have you ever seen a drug addict who wasn’t high?

Have you ever seen an alcoholic who wasn’t drunk?

Have you ever seen a chain-smoker who didn’t have cigarettes?

OF COURSE NOT!!!

And the reason is simple, the most important thing in a heroin junkie’s life is shooting up and getting high!

You’ll never hear a junkie say “Well, I’d really like to shoot up, but I don’t have a lot of money for heroin and you know I wanted to buy a new pair of shoes and you know I want to stop by Burger King . . . so I just won’t get high this week.”

You’ll never hear any of that because the most important thing in a junkie’s life is shooting up and getting high and he’ll do anything he has to do to get a fix!!!

Unlike most “fitness buffs”, who are always coming up with more important, better things to spend their time and money on than the food and workouts they need to achieve their goals.

The fact of the matter is you could learn a lot from chain-smokers, alcoholics and drug addicts because they will always do whatever it takes to get what they want most out of life!

So, really comes down to this:  When you say “I don’t have enough money to eat that many times a day” or “I don’t have enough money for supplements or a gym membership”, what you’re really saying is “It’s not that important for me to cut costs in other areas of my life and being in shape is not important enough for me to find a way to make more money so I can afford supplements”.

 

Clothes are just shells that cover the person you are underneath

As you may know, I used to live in Germany, where people are really into fashion.  Everyone there really seems to enjoy looking good.  Even regular guys and girls in tiny little villages always dress well and take care of themselves.

I remember one time I was laying on the ground in the gym, having my post-workout shake and taking a break after my plyometric workout when a couple of guys came up and asked what I was drinking.

When I told them it was dextrose, creatine, glutamine and whey protein they told me they didn’t have enough money for “all that” but they were wearing name brand, designer f@@cking clothes to go to the gym!

People, listen, the shirt I’m wearing as I write these words is a long-sleeved, tight Under Armor knock-off that my girlfriend got in Walmart for like ten dollars.

I got my running shoes from Walmart, too.  The cheapest ones I could find!  And don’t say “well I want to go running so I need expensive shoes with better support”, because I do more plyometrics and jumping than anyone I know and I haven’t destroyed my back or knees or anything, even though I’m 41 years old.

Even when I was living in Germany, I would go to the supermarket and buy a pack of the cheapest undershirts to train in.

So tell me this, if you have the choice between either wearing the newest Nike or Under Armour clothes to the gym or having enough food to feed your muscle and starve your bodyfat, what’s more important to you?

Frankly, I’d rather put my money into building my body, even if it means dressing like a bum when I work out than dressing like a fashion model in the gym, but feeding myself like a bum, so I look like a bum when I take off my expensive clothes.

 

Most people can’t afford to eat like athletes because they’d rather waste their money on stuff that’s actually BAD for their health!

Most people would rather waste their money on toxins that will make them sick, unattractive and age faster than invest their money in healthy, nutritious food that will keep them young, healthy and strong.

I’ve been told by people that they can’t afford to eat healthy or go to the gym, while they’re smoking a cigarette!

Now, I certainly don’t smoke anymore, but I used to years ago and I remember even back then in Europe that a pack of cigarettes used to cost over 5 Euros.  For one pack!  And, since I used to smoke two packs a day, there goes three hundred Euros per month!

You mean to tell me that you can blow five bucks a pop on Starbucks coffee or $7-10 on a Supermeal from Burger World, but you can’t spend the same amount of money or less on a couple of chicken breasts and few cans of tuna?!?!?!?!

Ok, maybe you’re not going to be able to afford the best grass-fed, organic food or the most expensive supplements, but you could get your calories in every day, eat clean and get some kind of a workout in.

Remember that the next time that you hear someone say he doesn’t have enough money for gym memberships or supplements or food.

It just basically means that he’s not serious enough and that he cares more about other things or he’s not willing to find a solution, like working out without a gym or finding a diet that is cheaper and doesn’t use supplements, but still gets results.
