Does Vince Gironda’s steak and eggs diet lack fiber?

Vince Gironda’s steak and eggs diet is very effective and very straightforward.  You eat nothing but steak or chopped beef and whole eggs, which keeps your fat and protein intake high and your carbohydrate intake close to zero.

The lack of carbohydrates allows you to lose fat quickly, while the muscle-building protein and testosterone-producing fat enable you to maintain or even increase your lean muscle mass.

HOWEVER, one of the first things that most people notice about this diet is that it lacks dietary fiber.

You see, your body gets most of it’s fiber from carbohydrate sources and, since this diet is so low in carbohydrates, a question many people have is how do you avoid constipation and support general health without fiber?

Well, first of all, let’s consider the reasons for eating low-carb:

Why shouldn’t you eat carbohydrates while on a cutting diet?

1.  Eating carbohydrates will postpone fat burning  Vince Gironda realized that your body will always prefer to burn carbohydrates as long as they are present.  Because eating carbohydrates will postpone fat burning until those carbohydrate stores are depleted, Gironda reasoned that it made more sense to skip eating carbs altogether and jump straight to burning fat instead, both the dietary fat that you eat and your body’s stored fat.

2.  Eating high-glycemic carbohydrates will cause the body to store fat  Eating high-glycemic carbohydrates will cause the body’s insulin levels to abruptly spike and high insulin levels cause your body to store fat.  Because fat and protein don’t cause a rise in insulin, avoiding carbohydrates means that your insulin levels will remain steady throughout the day.

So, if those are the only two reasons why we can’t eat carbohydrates, then we have some good news . . .

Dietary fiber doesn’t count as a carbohydrate because the human body can’t digest it!

Dietary fiber is defined as “the indigestible portion of food derived from plants.”

Wikipedia goes on to say that “fiber contributes less energy . . . also known as dietary Calories (Cal)—than sugars and starches because it cannot be fully absorbed by the body”.

The bottom line is that fiber isn’t really a carbohydrate in the sense of this diet because it cannot be burnt for energy instead of fat, nor will it spike insulin levels.

Gironda knew this as well, which is why the later versions of his diet had “a huge green salad” as part of the last meal of the day.  Just make sure not to add any high-carb fruits, veggies or salad dressing.

I personally use 4 teaspoons of a generic fiber supplement every evening because I personally don’t like to eat green vegetables every day.  I make sure I use a sugarfree version which contains 22g of carbohydrates, all of which come from fiber.

So, that’s it.  Either eat a large salad every day, lots of cooked green vegetables or a sugarfree fiber supplement and you’ll have no problems at all while on the steak and eggs diet.
