Does the steak & eggs diet work for women who don’t exercise?

I got this question per email yesterday and, although I already sent an answer, I wanted to share my answer with everyone else in a short video and blog post, so, here it is:

Hi, will this diet work well for women and what macros should women be trying to achieve?  Also, can this diet work without exercise?

Since there is more than one question, I’m going to answer them in several parts:

Will the steak & eggs diet work for women?

Of course the steak & eggs diet, like any other diet, will work for women.

As a matter of fact, my girlfriend was on this diet for a while.  She loved it and got great results.

Now, the steak and eggs diet is an ESPECIALLY GOOD DIET FOR MEN because the high-fat and high-cholesterol content really boost testosterone production, which will help a man build muscle and burn fat, but that just means that men will get an added benefit.

That doesn’t mean that women won’t get the other benefits from this diet.

What macros should women be trying to achieve?

You don’t have to calculate your macronutrient RATIOS, the ratios of protein to carbohydrates to fat for this diet because beef and whole eggs already exist in the perfect ratios to support muscle growth and fat reduction.

All you need to do is figure out how many total calories you should be eating every day and then calculate how many eggs and how much beef you need to eat in two meals to get that amount of calories.

How do you determine your daily caloric intake?

To lose fat while maintaining muscle mass, start with about 10-12 times your lean or goal weight in pounds.

An example of what I mean when I say your “lean weight” or “goal weight” would be if you weigh 160lbs and you want to weigh 140lbs, you would multiply your goal weight of 140 by 10 or 12, not your current weight of 160.

Let’s say you want to weigh 100 lbs.  In that case, you would start with 1000-1200 calories per day.

Weigh yourself once per week, first thing in the morning and, as long as you’re losing weight, stick with those calories.  If you stop losing or start to gain weight, reduce your daily intake by 100-200 calories and see how that goes for a week or two.

On the other hand, if your hunger gets out of control, you seriously lack energy or your workouts start to suffer, try upping your calories by 100 per day.

Can this diet work without exercise?

Any diet will work without exercise, but you’ll have to keep your calories even lower than if you were exercising because you’ll be burning fewer calories throughout the day.

Let’s say, for example that two people have the exact same body composition and lifestyle and therefore burn the same amount of calories per day.  If they both consume 2000 calories per day and one of them burns an extra 500 calories through exercise, he’ll lose a pound per week more than the other, who doesn’t exercise.

If the other person were to make up for his lack of exercise through diet alone, he would only be able to consume 1500 calories, if he wants to lose weight at the same rate as the person who exercises.  The exerciser can lose weight even though he eats 33% more calories than the non-exerciser.

As little as 500 calories can be a big deal!

Don’t underestimate how much of a difference just 500 calories can make over the long run!

A pound of fat is about 3500 calories, so, if you were to burn an average of 500 calories per day through diet or exercise more than you consume, you would lose about one pound per week, four pounds per month, 48 pounds per year.

If you were to consume an average of 500 calories per day (which isn’t much food) MORE than you burn, you would GAIN about one pound per week, four pounds per month . . . in other words, YOU WOULD GAIN ABOUT 48 POUNDS OF FAT IN ONE YEAR!

Well, I sure hope this touched on a couple of topics you guys might have been wondering about.  If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to send me an email and ask!
